Just listened to the new album and because i can, i thought i would write my opinion of it. If anyone cares.
Essentially i'll give it a 7/10. Pretty much my usual Melvins album rating of late. Yet this is pretty much your standard Melvins release of late too. I thought to myself recently that despite the fact that the band are good they are never really amazing are they? At least on record anyway. I often find some of their songs throwaway or just plain cringe worthy yet others are decent songs, however never ones that really amaze or leave you thinking "wow". I think that's an important point.
I know many say the band are unpredictable but it seems very much the opposite now. Each record has a few really nice sounding, crunchy guitar riff songs and then "out of the box" silly numbers that feel included just to be eclectic. Different types of songs so the band can indulge some other interests or styles. I suppose it's nice that they try different things and keep it interesting for themselves but a record never feels very wholesome as a result. More of an in-joke, souless or a bit of a tossed off affair. End an album with a long, noodling, trying to be weird noise number which features a semi-irritating repeated passage and there you have it, you've got yourself a Melvins album!
Still, having said all that, 'Hold It In' is very listenable like all the bands more recent releases. You can go along on the journey without any real stumbling block in the way. Perhaps this is because of the dynamics present keeping things interesting. It works well as something to put on in the background. Yet as music to get you energized or excited or whatever else it's not exactly all that fascinating. At least to me anyway. I will say though that 'Bunk Up' is a cool tune. Easily my pick of the lot. That one warrants repeat listens whereas none of the others leave me wanting to hear them again particularly.
